On 27 March 1977, aviation witnessed its darkest day.

At Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife North Airport) in Spain's Canary Islands, two fully loaded Boeing 747 Jumbo Jets one operated by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and the other by Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) collided on the runway.

Within seconds, 583 people lost their lives and making it the deadliest accident in aviation history. Unlike most aviation disasters this tragedy did not occur in the sky. It happened entirely on the ground during takeoff.

A Normal Flight Turns Into a Nightmare

Both aircraft were originally scheduled to land at Gran Canaria Airport.

However, earlier that day a terrorist bomb exploded inside the terminal building at Gran Canaria, forcing authorities to temporarily close the airport. As a result, many incoming flights including KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736 were diverted to the much smaller Los Rodeos Airport on Tenerife.

The unexpected arrival of numerous large aircraft overwhelmed the airport.
